Green light for £120M BBC Cardiff HQ as project delivery team announced
Gleeds has been appointed as cost manager to deliver BBC Wales’ new headquarters in Central Square, Cardiff.
The news comes as the BBC and its development partner, Rightacres, officially announce the green light for the 150,000 sq ft scheme, following the appointment of ISG as main contractor. The new head office building will accommodate studio, production and office space across four floors housing 1200 staff.
Alan Bainbridge of BBC Property, said: “Getting the BBC project from the design board to site has been a huge team effort and we are delighted that this project is now becoming a reality.”
The project is part of wider regeneration plans at Central Square, which have been pioneered by Cardiff-based property developer, Rightacres. Work is scheduled to start on 7th December for completion in 2019. At the same time, work will begin to construct a second commercial development at 2 Central Square on behalf of the developer. Preparatory works on the 120,000 sq ft site will progress up to ground floor level ahead of detailed planning consent, due in Spring 2016.
Jason Hyett, project director at Rightacres said: “We have a great project team, led by Foster + Partners, supported by Arup and Gleeds. To ensure that we deliver the project to the level of quality expected by both the architect and our client, we needed a main contractor with the best credentials."
Commenting on the scheme, Chairman for Gleeds Worldwide Richard Steer, said: “Having project managed Broadcasting House in London, we are thrilled to be working with the BBC again in Cardiff. The regeneration Rightacres have planned will completely rejuvenate the area, giving visitors a real wow-factor as they step off the train at Cardiff Central. Great news for a city that is projected to be the UK’s fastest growing over the next 10 years.”
