Augusta University J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons

The Education Commons Building and the renovation of the Gross Anatomy Lab provide the Medical College of Georgia with a twenty-first-century learning and information environment to directly support its academic and research mission.

The 177,000 SF building houses various disciplines including the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health and Dentistry. The facility includes five large classrooms, 13 learning communities, clinical skills area, administration space and a small cafeteria. The renovations to the Gross Anatomy Lab were included in the project, which consisted of 22,188 SF of state-of-the-art dissection and teaching labs, new administration space and new storage areas for cadavers.

The building was named after the late Dr. J. Harold Harrison, a 1948 Medical College of Georgia Alumnus and pioneer in his field of vascular surgery. Dr. Harrison and his wife, Sue, contributed $10 million to the construction of the building. After his death, Dr. Harrison and his family made a transformational endowment gift of $66 million to the Medical College of Georgia Foundation creating the J. Harold Harrison, MD Fellows fund. This program is the Medical College of Georgia’s foremost medical scholarship, placing students in a unique group of dedicated scholars, offering a scholarship that approximates the cost of attendance.
