Tai Kwun

Restoring history for the arts

As one of the most significant revitalisation projects in Hong Kong, Tai Kwun is the territory’s centre for heritage and art. Situated at the meticulously restored Central Police Station compound, which includes 3 declared monuments of the former Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy and the Victoria Prison, Tai Kwun brings a wide range of heritage, contemporary art and leisure programmes to the region.

buildings of historical or architectural significance were preserved as part of the project.

A carefully considered cultural space

Gleeds are managing the fit out works for the 27,900msite, which included both new build and refurbishment works. Due to the nature of the existing heritage buildings, extreme care is needed to carry out works on site. Additional key features of the project include:

  • World class art gallery
  • 200 seat auditorium
  • 25 retail outlets
  • 10 restaurants
  • 2 open spaces for outdoor programmes and events
  • Workshop space

Communication is key

This project is a product of a special partnership between the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Stakeholder management is vital to the success of the project and the Gleeds team is responsible for coordinating with the 30+ parties involved, including Government departments, tenants, heritage teams and architects; Herzog & de Meuron, Purcell and Rocco Design Architects Limited. Based on our experience and early risk identification process, Gleeds are able to advise project teams of the associated risks and propose mitigation measures throughout the programme of works to ensure the project is delivered on time.
